He
went on to become producer of the KCMJ morning show. During the same time,
he also became a DJ on a late night radio station in San Diego, 100 miles
away. He used his night job to express his personality over the radio.
In
1995, Carson was offered the afternoon shift at KOME-FM in San Jose, and one
of his first assignments was to cover the 1995 MTV Video Music Awards from
New York City. What followed was a job on the popular KROQ-FM. Then Carson
got his big break. It was at this job that MTV realized the potential of this
to-be-teen-magnet, and they offered him a job.
One
of Carson's first jobs at MTV was on "Motel California." He then
hosted a show called "MTV Live", which later became "TRL."
In addition, Carson also hosts a vast array of MTV specials, such as "Wannabe
A VJ Too Search" and "WWF Week."
In
great demand, Carson has a very busy schedule, however, he claims to get a
lot of energy from his favorite candy, Pixie Stix. His schedule includes movie
premieres, his one hour show, TRL, giving ideas to the directors of his shows,
going on location to shoot special shows and interviews with major movie stars,
and more. He is never too busy to give up what matters a lot to him. Carson
enjoys playing his guitar, although he admits, "I am not very good."
He also writes music. He has always loved music, because, "There's always
a song to make me feel better, or to remind me of a special girl in my life."
Carson
has performed with Smash Mouth, he has his own record company and he writes
movies (the one he is working on at the moment is about one minute in length
so far).
Asked
where he wants to be in 10 years, he says "It isn't in the executive
seat at MTV." Instead, it's on the PGA tour. He boasts a zero handicap.
In addition, he races in NASCAR, and works at his record company. He hopes
to make a lot of money so that he can pay back his father, who worked three
jobs to send Carson to college. Just this comment alone shows that there is
a lot more to Carson than meets the TRL eye.
Carson is a man of many talents and interests as well as being a household
face to many families. So far, Carson has made remarkable success in being
popular among teens, which is a major accomplishment these days because teens
can be very judgmental. Carson has made being a VJ a dream for many kids and
I think he is a remarkable man in many ways. I predict we will be seeing Carson
for many years to come.
