My Turn

September. Not January 1st - yet, it's a New Year. A chance to make New (school) Year resolutions to work hard to achieve the goals you have set out for yourself. An opportunity to turn over a new leaf. A clean slate to prove to yourself that you can accomplish anything that you set your mind to doing.

We can always improve, we can always do better, we can always surmount obstacles. This is a new season. Possibly a Super Bowl season. And, like a football team that has talent, you need to believe that you can attain your goals in order to have a winning season. All of the talent in the world won't make a difference unless you have the drive and the desire. Comparatively speaking, even if you are faced with a big blocking obstacle, an exam, an assignment that initially seems complicated or inane, you will tackle it with the same can-do attitude football players assume when they go out on the field to face their adversary. Sure there will be times when your confidence gets injured, but these experiences are learning fields, and making mistakes, and learning from them is often the best training ground a student of life can have to become the very best he or she can be.

This is the common thread that runs through many of the articles that appear in our Fall issue of TeenSpeak. From General Colin Powell to the new R & B 14 year old group,
"Prove Yourself True," (PYT) to Heisman Trophy winner Big Blue's Ron Dayne, to the newly acquired Jets tight end Anthony Becht, establishing goals and believing in yourself has enabled each of these leaders, by example, to arrive at an honored station at this juncture in their lives.
