JETS'
#88: His Own Man
by Ryan Sherwin
Jets' #88 makes a hard
cut across the field and smoothly catches the ball. You can see he isn't
your 'normal' tight end. He is special. Jets' #88 is tight end Anthony Beck.
Even as a youngster, Becht admitted that he had always aspired to be the
best he could be. He credits his parents, who encouraged him to pursue his
dreams, whatever they may be. While not too many people thought that he
would end up playing professional football, he is clearly delighted that
he has proven them all wrong. In fact, this rookie for the Jets is apt to
see a lot of action on the field playing first string.
On this day, July 21st, Becht is impressing this reporter with his ability
to make a spectacular catch or start a drive with a crushing block. It's
New York Jets' training camp, and Becht is playing well, blocking effectively,
and catching most of the balls thrown his way. This 6'5" 267 pound
former West Virginia Mountaineer will be expected to add to the Jets' offense,
and add a threat that the green and white have been missing for years. Not
the least intimidated by the challenge, he told TeenSpeak that he has had
some help from veteran tight end Fred Baxter, also from Coach Groh, as well
as Director of Player Personnel Carl Banks, and even the ever-watchful General
Manager Bill Parcells has given him some tips. Very much his own person,
Anthony Becht told TeenSpeak that he observes the strengths in other tight
ends' styles, and may include them in his game plan, but he nonetheless
prides himself on being his own person.
