TeenSpeak's Outlook on the Giants' Season 2000

by Jordan Mamorsky and Ryan Sherwin

Big Blue enters its 2000 season with high expectations from fans and management. Will they extinguish the demons of two mediocre seasons, or will they resort to the same mediocracy? Will fans be chanting dee-fense wildly late into January? Will Ron Dayne ignite the offense with his tremendous ability and all-heart enthusiasm? Giants fans remain optimistic, but only time will tell.

Offense
Quarterback: This position is a question mark for the Giants due to the erratic play of Kerry Collins, who has looked magical at moments and horrible at others. If Collins steps it up a notch this year, the Giants could be contenders. It is also up to Coach Fassell to prove his quarterback guru status this year, and groom Collins into a force to be reckoned with. If Collins falters, Jason Garrett, the former back-up quarterback for the Cowboys, is a reliable back-up for the Big Blue. Mike Cherry, the third string quarterback, could have his long awaited opportunity to get in the game. -Grade B

Back Field
The Giants made a considerable upgrade in the 2000 draft by getting the Heisman Trophy winner Ron Dayne at the 11th pick this year. He will be challenged valiantly by Joe Montgomery, who will not go down without a fight. If Dayne replicates the success that he had at Wisconsin, and plays with the same passion he is known for, the Giants will have a powerful weapon in their backfield. Dayne could make Big Blue's season really big. Tiki Barber remains a threat as a third down back and a punt returner. Charles Way's absence leaves a huge void at the full back position, unless the Giants are able to upgrade at the full back position before the season starts. If they can't this may prove to be a big weakness. Greg Comella will try his best at making Giant fans forget about Way. -Grade B
