Bow Wow Does It Positively Rap

by Jordan Mamorsky

Lil' Bow Wow prides himself on his clean, cuss-free music, which, he told this TeenSpeak reporter, allows him to reach a wide range of people. "My audience is age one to one hundred," he told me seriously. "I want to reach all people with my music." This attitude is a breath of fresh air for rap music which has been tainted with swears since the introduction of gangster rap by the rap group, NWA. Bow Wow neither condones nor condems the style of hardcore rap and simply says, "It's not for me." However, he does believe parents are to blame for letting their pre-teen kids listen to the adult issues expressed in gangster rap.

Bow Wow's own music has undergone many metamorphoses since his arrival in the rap business 7 years ago. Discovered by Snoop Dogg, Bow Wow fell in love with rap and has recently sprung to the top of billboard charts with his new album, "Beware of Dog." "Lyrics-wise, I began rapping about little kids. Now I rap about girls," he confided.

Along with being girl-crazy, lil' Bow Wow lives as "normal" a teenage life as he can. While one may consider it difficult to balance rap, sports and academics, Bow Wow has found equilibrium. He is an aspiring point guard who dreams of carrying on Allen Iverson's legacy with the 76ers, he's a rap prodigy, and he's a student at the same time. "I put academics, sports and rap at different sides of my life," he admitted.

Growing up in the rap game, lil' Bow Wow has found different role models for counsel. His chief role model is his mother, who raised him without a dad, and got him where he is today. Jermaine Dupri is his rap mentor who has taken him under his wing and tutored him in the rap business.

Lil' Bow Wow has lived in the public spotlight most of his life. He attributes his rap success to his faith in God and to his good looks. Most importantly, lil' Bow Wow serves as a positive role model for teens, boys or girls, because he has become popular with clean music. He is certainly not an ordinary rapper, but rather, an ordinary teen who gives us a breath of fresh air to rap about.
