Shopping
Should Be Fun! Believe it or not, not everyone rises to the occasion of "shop 'til you drop". In fact, shopping during the holidays in crowded stores with so much to choose from can be hard for even the most intrepid shoppers. It's hard to balance holiday spirit with the task of purchasing gifts for all the people on a list. Also, sometimes it's not hard to "drop" looking for the perfect gift at the right price. TeenSpeak spoke to shopping consultant Meri Lillien (a shopping consultant at Bloomingdales in New York City) to get some tips for teens on how to find the right gifts for parents, siblings or that special someone. Meri told me that making a list before you go on your shopping spree is very important. "You should always plan ahead so you can get an idea not only of how many gifts you have to buy, but also what you want to get. It can be very practical to look through the hundreds of catalogues just to get some ideas," she suggested. When making your list, you should think about a person's interests,-- sports, music, etc., but it's a good idea to try and get something that people wouldn't think of buying for themselves. "What do you want for the holidays?" "All I want is you!" Sound familiar? Then you are as stumped as I am about what to buy for my parents this season. Meri told me that it's always a good idea to get something original, like an umbrella for your dad, so he won't catch a cold running to work in bad weather. Has your mother seemed particularly stressed lately? Meri suggested a spa basket with bath and body products which should help to make her cool as a cucumber! Spa baskets range from about $35.00 and up. A picture frame with a special picture inside is always a perfect gift for mom and dad because it shows that you care. If you think that your big or little brother or sister is annoying, then think again. The holiday season is a time for giving. Think about what you might like -- a new watch? How about Baby G, Fossil or a Techno Marine watch is very hot this season, and they range in price from $40.00 - $120.00. CDs are always a good bet, too. Ms. Lillien told me that you don't have to spend a fortune to please the one you love. A pretty necklace or bracelet in sterling silver, with a special engraving is certain to please, as are fun rhinestone accessories. For that special guy in your life, this is the year to buy New York baseball souvenirs. A Yankees baseball cap, or Mets/Yankees Subway series t-shirt is certain to be a thoughtful gift for someone who believes they have lived through baseball history. Movie theater certificates also make wonderful gifts, provided you get to go and "enjoy the show!" Also, if your significant other is old enough to drive, car wash certificates will be appreciated this winter when that dirty snow and road salt sticks to that brand-new car and a free cleaning would be appreciated. Happy Holidays! |
