Primping For The Prom

by Dana Schuster

Everyone knows that the last few weeks of school are often the most stressful. Finals, end of the year projects, SAT’s and, of course, prom, all add up to a packed spring schedule. Unfortunately, most teenage boys underestimate the anxiety prom can cause a young woman. Not only do the girls have to schedule their hair, nail and transportation weeks ahead, but picking out a dress is a daunting task, alone.

Luckily TeenSpeak was invited to sit in with a Teen Vogue photo shoot for the New York Daily News, where three lucky winners were picked for a prom makeover styled by Teen Vogue.

Like most girls, each of the winners wanted a look that was completely "them," and individuality definitely ruled as the trend that afternoon. The three teenagers modeled looks that ranged from a classic ball gown with a tight bodice in hot pink, to a funky strapless blue dress with glitter splattered across it.

Fifty years ago, women would never have considered going to a vintage shop to buy their prom dress. Crazy as it sounds, having the same prom dress as someone else was almost guaranteed, and, believe this, embraced! Nowadays, girls search for hours through racks at second time around stores with high hopes to find a one of a kind dress that will set them apart from the crowd.

At Teen Vogue’s fashion shooting, the winners didn’t have to go looking far for well-priced finds. All of the dresses were under $200, making the styles shown affordable, yet fashionable. Stylists paid careful attention to details, curling the hair until perfect face-framing ringlets were formed, accessorizing the outfits with shoes from Jimmy Choo, Via Spiga, Bebe and Marc Jacobs. Earrings, ribbon chokers adorned with flowers and colorful make-up complimented each girl’s unique ensemble.

So whether you want a sleek, black dress that hugs the body, or a high-voltage shocker mimicking your favorite celebrity’s Oscar gown, there are a myriad of affordable choices out there that will surely make you the belle of the ball!
