Through My Lens

By Aaron Duffy

Korean born artist Nikki Lee defines American cultural identity through her photographs in a way that is unlike anyone else. Lee captures America in everyday experiences provoking viewers to see them with a new focus.

A senior citizen waiting at a bus stop, skateboarders riding in a half pipe - two subjects that clearly have nothing to do with each other have a connection in Lee's work. She appears disguised in costume, make-up and body language in each shot, blending into all communities of American culture, (Hispanic, Black- American, Yuppie, senior citizen, Chinese, Japanese, lesbian, exotic dancer, etc.) which speaks volumes about issues of identity. As a Korean in the United States, she is also the schoolgirl, perfectly dressed in school uniform; she is the lively hood, the prostitute, the senior citizen.

America, in the eyes of Nikki Lee, is not just ethnically diverse, but also stylistically, sexually and regionally diverse. Through her depictions of so many different shots of Americans doing what they like to do best, and being a part of each photograph, Lee celebrates America, our richness in culture - the perfect answer to "Who We Are As Americans."
